Celebrating The Lunar New Year

3,2,1, HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!! My whole family gathers every year on this very day to celeberate and welcome this festive season. Together with auspicious and gourmet foods like roasted ducks and Abalones, we enjoy precious family times by just watching Tv, Chit chatting and my Uncles' favourite, Karaoke. They all have powerful voices, each with their different pitches, just like a choir but only the 3 of them, would sing and create an atmosphere of joy and happines. For me, I'll always hang out with my cousins (By the way, they are all above 30 years) and they would tell jokes and one will never fail to share his experiences about Tai Chi. He loves it ever since he started learning and likes to perform his skills and talents in front of us. What a show off right? but he is truly amazing, hit him with a bamboo pole on his stomach and it'll break into 2. Push him with a finger at his throat and he would simply make you fly back off balance.
Of course, Chinese New Year is more or less all about Hong baos and blessings so I started the first day by visiting my God-Grandmother (my dad was adopted by his Auntie). She stays by herself at Pipit road which is an area of low cost HDB flats meant for the elderly. Sometimes, I don't like going there as the lift lobbies and staircases are very dirty. There is always a stench of urine and once a while feaces, true enough once the lift opened, a big puddle of yellow liquid was there on the floor. As she stayed on the tenth storey, we had no choice but to avoid the "Thing" and hold our breath while we went up. Finally we reached her unit and we greeted her and her guests when we went in. Titbits were a galore as I munched away followed by the Hong Baos.
The next stop was my Great grandmother's house. She is in the pink of health, in her 90's and yet still able to move around. That's a milestone everyone wants to reach. I look forward going there every year as I get to also appreciate traditional delights. Top of my list is the Rice cake, it's a redish pink cake which is filled with glutinous rice inside that is extremely tasty.
Afterwards, we drove over to my cousin's new home which is just opposite. He got married a couple of months ago and only recently moved in. It's a small 3 room condominium that is nicely designed and has a beautiful living room. We played Wii over there. It was the tennis game that needed us to swing the controller like a racket to hit the ball. Technology is so advance now adays that the controller does not even need a wire. We had lots of fun and even my parents joined along.
By the time I got home, $300 of cold hard cash was in my pocket. I am delighted as my target has been furfilled, my savings have gone up again and this means more things to be bought. I wish everyone a Happy New Year and I hope all of you guys would enjoy yourselves!!!
